Sustainability: Ag Conflict Ghana

Sustainability Stories: Articulating Agricultural Conflict and Agritourism Conservation Efforts in Ghana

STUDENT MEDIA GRANT PROGRAM

SMGP 2024-2025 Grantee: Jessica Spence

Jessica Spence is a Ph.D. student in Agricultural Extension and Education at Virginia Tech. She completed her Student Media Grant Program in Ghana.

Thematic Focus:

The project documented and illustrated the conflict generated from agricultural practices and the growing solution, centered around the people making it all happen, and how they do so as an innovative form of agritourism within the hospitality industry. By visually documenting and telling their stories, this Student Media Grant project facilitated the ultimate promotion of what exactly this group of Ghanaian farmers are doing: increasing peace and food security in their country through helping the farmers who feed Ghana and providing educational agritourism opportunities for visitors. Currently, the most visited locations in Ghana include botanical gardens and national parks, both of which can be impacted by the continued use of non-CA practices in surrounding areas.
